Dangerous heat hits Mississippi; Level 3 risk statewide
A state advisory posted on social media says all of Mississippi is under a Level 3 — Significant Heat Risk Tuesday, with high temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s and heat indices reaching 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
The advisory warns that heat stroke becomes increasingly likely with prolonged outdoor activity. Officials urged residents to protect themselves by hydrating throughout the day, taking frequent breaks out of the heat, recognizing the signs of heat illness and never leaving people or pets in vehicles.
Heat advisories are issued to alert the public to conditions that raise the danger of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Vulnerable groups include older adults, young children and people who work or exercise outdoors.
If you must be outside, try to limit strenuous activity and spend time in air-conditioned or shaded areas. The heightened heat can also strain local resources and increase demand for cooling centers and emergency services. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
