Mississippi faces severe storms, dangerous heat through weekend
The National Weather Service is forecasting a slight risk, level two of five, for severe storms across portions of north and northeast Mississippi this afternoon into the early evening on July 2, 2026, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a Facebook post. The agency said damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail are possible.
At the same time, MEMA warned that dangerous heat will persist each afternoon through Saturday, July 2–4, 2026, with heat index values reaching 105 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. The agency urged residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings and to limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
MEMA reiterated common heat-safety guidance, including drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks if working or exercising outside, and never leaving children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short time. The National Weather Service issues categorical risk levels to help communicate the likelihood of severe weather across regions.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency encouraged residents to continue following local meteorologists for the latest forecasts. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
