Mississippi faces elevated heat risk; agency urges precautions
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said much of the state is under Significant (Level 3) or Elevated (Level 2) heat risk, with heat indices reaching 105 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas, and urged residents to take precautions.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses, the agency said in a Facebook post. It noted that hot days followed by warm nights can make it harder for bodies to cool down.
MEMA advised residents to stay in air-conditioned areas when possible, bring pets indoors, drink plenty of water, wear light, loose-fitting clothing and never leave children, older adults or pets in a vehicle. The agency also urged people to check on friends, family and neighbors during prolonged heat.
