Mississippi agency urges precautions, lists Greenwood cooling centers
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency posted on its Facebook page urging residents to take precautions during the heat and noting that Greenwood has opened three cooling centers for those who need relief, the agency said.
The city of Greenwood opened three cooling centers at Greenwood Senior Citizen Center, 507 Howard St.; Greenwood Youth Center, 926 W. Henry St.; and the Old Greenwood Fire Station No. 3, 106 E. Claiborne Ave., the agency said.
The agency reminded residents to recognize signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, to drink plenty of water and to check on neighbors, especially the elderly, the post said. Public safety officials often emphasize hydration and monitoring vulnerable people during heat events because older adults and those with chronic conditions face higher risk.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it will update its website with additional cooling locations as local officials notify them (https://www.msema.org/get-assistance/disaster-resources/shelters-and-safe-rooms). We will provide more information as it becomes available.
