MEMA opens six disaster centers for storm, tornado victims

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency will open six Disaster Service Centers tomorrow at noon to serve Mississippians who suffered damage during the May 6-7 severe storms and tornadoes, the agency said in a Facebook post.

Federal funding under disaster declaration DR-4922-MS is available to residents of Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln and Wilkinson counties, MEMA said. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.

At the centers, homeowners and renters can meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. FEMA application specialists can answer questions about application status and help with new applications. MEMA representatives can address unmet needs, explain potential state and local resources and make referrals to nonprofit organizations. Disaster loan specialists from the U.S. Small Business Administration can explain how loans can help both homeowners and businesses and provide details about loan terms.

The centers will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Locations are: Franklin County Courthouse, 36 Main Street, Meadville; Lamar County Community Center, 105 Central Industrial Row, Purvis; Lawrence County EOC, 1441 FE Sellers Hwy, Monticello; Bogue Chitto Fire Department, 357 Bogue Chitto Road SE, Bogue Chitto; East Lincoln Fire Department, 3357 East Lincoln Road SE, Brookhaven; and Wilkinson County EMA Office, 1495 U.S. Hwy 61 South, Woodville.

It is not necessary to visit a center to apply. Residents can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or use the FEMA app. If using a relay service, such as video relay service or captioned telephone service, applicants should provide FEMA with the number for that service, MEMA said. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
