Lucedale man charged with aggravated assault after George County shooting

LUCEDALE, Mississippi — A Lucedale man has been charged with aggravated assault after a shooting in George County, the George County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded at about 8:51 p.m. May 5 to a report of a man who had been shot in the 100 block of High Hopes Lane, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators with the George County Criminal Investigations Division identified Mason D. McCarty, 29, of Lucedale, as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

McCarty was located and taken into custody without incident May 6, the sheriff’s office said. He was formally charged with aggravated assault and is being held at the George County Regional Correctional Facility awaiting his initial appearance before a George County Justice Court judge.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said violence has no place in the community and praised patrol deputies and investigators for quickly identifying and apprehending the suspect. The sheriff’s office said the case remains under investigation and no additional information will be released at this time.

Lucedale is the county seat of George County in southeastern Mississippi. McCarty is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
