Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office announces 2026 Junior Sheriff’s Academy

LOWNDES COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE — The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office will hold a 2026 Junior Sheriff’s Academy June 22-26 at its headquarters at 527 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive South, Columbus 39701, the office announced.

The half-day program runs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day and is open to students entering grades 5 through 8. The academy is designed to let participants explore careers in law enforcement through interactive, hands-on experiences with local deputies, the office said.

Planned activities include firearm safety and tactical training, a mock trial, a jail experience, field sobriety and impaired driving demonstrations, K-9 demonstrations, traffic stop and narcotics unit operations, and conflict resolution training, the announcement said.

The cost to attend is $25 per participant. Space is limited, and the office encouraged early registration. “The Junior Sheriff’s Academy gives young people an opportunity to learn firsthand about the responsibilities and challenges of law enforcement while building confidence, leadership skills, and positive relationships with deputies,” the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said.

Parents and guardians seeking to register a child or obtain more information may contact Lt. Rhonda Sanders at (662) 251-8159.
