Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office completes first Junior Sheriff’s Academy

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi completed its first-ever Junior Sheriff’s Academy, the office said, concluding a week-long program that introduced young people to law enforcement and sought to build positive relationships between deputies and youth.

Participants received hands-on instruction and interactive demonstrations in self-defense, first aid, de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, firearm safety, drug education, anti-bullying, K-9 operations and drone operations, the office said. Organizers said the academy gave students opportunities to learn life skills and gain a greater understanding of the responsibilities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers.

The academy is part of the Pathway to Peace program, a community-focused initiative developed by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office to reduce violence, strengthen relationships and provide positive opportunities for youth and young adults through education, mentorship and community engagement.

“Watching these young people learn, grow, and interact with our deputies throughout the week has been incredibly rewarding,” said Sheriff Eddie Hawkins. “Our goal is to build trust, provide positive role models, and invest in the future of our community. The Junior Sheriff’s Academy is another step toward accomplishing that mission through our Pathway to Peace Program. We are grateful to our instructors, volunteers, community partners, and especially the parents who entrusted us with their children during this exciting week.” The sheriff’s office said it looks forward to expanding the academy and continuing programs that strengthen the partnership between law enforcement and residents. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
