Lee County inmate dies after medical emergency
An inmate at the Lee County Adult Detention Center was found unresponsive on the evening of June 3, 2026, and later died at a hospital, Lee County Sheriff Jim H. Johnson said in a Facebook post.
Detention center staff immediately rendered medical aid and requested emergency medical services, Johnson said. The inmate was transported by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the hospital and the detention center to begin an inquiry. According to Johnson, investigators have found no signs of trauma or evidence indicating an assault or altercation by another inmate or staff and the incident appears to have been a medical emergency.
Lee County coroner’s personnel said an autopsy will be conducted at the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory as soon as scheduling permits. Pursuant to Mississippi law, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is serving as the lead investigative agency and will submit findings and evidence to the attorney general’s office for review. The investigation remains ongoing. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
