Hattiesburg man arrested in fatal shooting

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The Hattiesburg Police Department said a 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting late Thursday night.

Police said officers responded about 11 p.m. Aug. 6 to the 200 block of Jesse Brown Street after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found an adult man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Investigators said the shooting followed a verbal argument in the front yard of a nearby home. The suspected shooter left the scene before officers arrived but was later arrested, according to a social media post from the department.

The Hattiesburg Police Department said it has charged Jalen Peterson, 21, of Hattiesburg, with murder and tampering with evidence. The department’s Criminal Investigations Division continues to investigate. Officials described the incident as isolated and said it poses no threat to the public. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
