Hattiesburg police investigate fatal crash on Old Highway 42

Hattiesburg police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Friday morning on Old Highway 42, the department said.

Officers responded at approximately 6:54 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2026, to a crash near Mixon Road, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post. A preliminary investigation indicates the driver lost control, left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver and a front-seat passenger sustained serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital; the passenger later died at the hospital.

The department said the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Investigators did not provide additional details in the post.

The Hattiesburg Police Department is the municipal force responsible for public safety in Hattiesburg and often investigates serious traffic collisions on city and county roadways. Single-vehicle crashes can result from a variety of factors, including loss of control, speed, distraction or impairment, but officials have not attributed any specific cause in this case.
