Gulfport Police Department honored Officer Charles Pettway in a Facebook post marking his retirement after years of service to the department and the community. The department said Pettway began as a reserve officer in 2001 and became a full-time officer on Nov. 20, 2006.
The department said Pettway became a school resource officer in July 2007 and served in that role for many years. The post described him as a mentor, role model, protector and trusted friend to students, teachers and staff, and said his impact on young people in the community was significant.
Gulfport Police Department also said Pettway served on the Police Explorer Advisory Board, helping guide young people interested in law enforcement. Explorer programs typically provide career exploration and mentoring for teens considering public safety careers.
The department thanked Pettway for his selfless service, positive attitude and commitment to the city and wished him a long and healthy retirement. The Facebook post included photos of Pettway and colleagues celebrating his departure, the department said.
