NWS issues dangerous heat stress warning for Mississippi
The National Weather Service issued a dangerous heat stress warning for Mississippi on Friday, in effect from June 12 through Sunday, June 14, with high temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s and heat indices climbing to 105 to 110 degrees.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency posted the alert on its official Facebook page and urged residents to hydrate, wear sunscreen and take breaks. The agency included photos with the post to accompany the warning.
Heat indices in the 105-to-110-degree range increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions and those who work or exercise outdoors face heightened danger during extended periods of extreme heat.
Public safety experts advise limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, seeking air-conditioned spaces, checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets, and drinking plenty of fluids. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
