Churchgoers urged to verify clergy texts, emails requesting gift cards
A Facebook post warned parishioners to confirm requests for gift card donations before responding to texts or emails that appear to come from a local pastor or priest.
The post advised people who receive such messages to check with their church first. It did not include further details about specific incidents.
Scammers often impersonate trusted figures, including clergy, to solicit money or gift cards. Fraudsters favor gift cards because they are hard to trace and can be quickly converted into goods or funds. Churches and other community organizations usually coordinate assistance for families in need through official channels such as bulletins, announced collections, or direct contact from known staff.
Church leaders and fraud-prevention organizations recommend verifying any unexpected request by calling a known church phone number, checking the congregation’s official website or social media accounts, or contacting church staff in person. Report suspected scams to local law enforcement. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
