Mississippians urged to stay weather aware
Residents across Mississippi are being reminded to stay weather aware as conditions can change rapidly, officials and weather agencies say.
Mississippi sits in a region that routinely faces severe weather threats, including strong thunderstorms, tornadoes, heavy rain and the remnants of tropical systems that can cause flooding and damaging winds. Those hazards can occur with little warning and affect communities statewide.
Weather experts and emergency managers advise people to sign up for local alerts, keep a battery-powered radio or NOAA weather radio on hand, and ensure mobile phones are set to receive emergency notifications. Households should review emergency plans, identify safe shelter locations and assemble basic supplies such as water, nonperishable food and flashlights.
Staying informed and prepared reduces risk to life and property when severe weather strikes. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
