Agencies coordinate traffic control after Fourth of July fireworks
A Facebook post thanked partner agencies for directing traffic on a busy highway after the Fourth of July celebration in Starkville, Mississippi. The post named Mr. Bud Gillis of the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Oktibbeha Emergency Management Agency, the Starkville Fire Department and the Starkville Parks & Recreation Department for their roles in keeping traffic moving safely after dark, the post said.
Directing vehicles on a highway at night requires planning and coordination, the post noted. Proper traffic control helps reduce congestion, maintain access for emergency vehicles and lower the risk of collisions following large public events.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is responsible for state highways and traffic management. Local emergency management agencies coordinate response and public safety planning, while fire departments and parks and recreation departments often assist with crowd control and event logistics at community celebrations.
The post underscores the importance of interagency cooperation to protect public safety during and after holiday events. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
