Students’ service project sends 155 LEGO sets to children receiving treatment

Retired educators Bob and Martha Frances Monroe’s volunteer work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital inspired a service-learning project for students at New Albany Elementary School. The Monroes have spent the past five years helping deliver “Happy Carts” filled with toys, games and activities to patients.

During that work, Martha Frances Monroe noticed how much children enjoyed the LEGO sets. She then contacted Elizabeth Vogel, a gifted education teacher, who developed the idea into an interdisciplinary service-learning project for her second- and third-grade Excel students.

The project connected students’ learning in history, art, engineering and STEM with service to others. The students learned that their ideas and actions could make a meaningful difference, according to the school district’s account.

The project will provide 155 LEGO sets for children receiving treatment, with each set intended to create a moment of happiness for a child.
