The Asylum Hill Project is wrapping up its fourth summer field school after a five-week season, the University of Mississippi Medical Center said in a Facebook post.
Students worked alongside professional bioarchaeologists throughout the season, helping to excavate the site and process historical artifacts, the post said. Organizers said the hands-on work contributes to a deeper understanding of the site’s history and significance.
The Asylum Hill Project is a field school program focused on archaeological and bioarchaeological training. Field schools offer students practical experience in excavation, artifact recovery and laboratory processing while contributing data useful to researchers and preservation specialists.
Project leaders and participating institutions say the work helps uncover stories from Mississippi’s past and supports ongoing research, preservation and education efforts.
