Mississippi agency shares FEMA assistance tips for Tropical Storm Arthur

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is advising people affected by Tropical Storm Arthur, identified as DR-4930, on steps to take while applying for FEMA assistance.

The agency said applicants who are denied assistance may be able to appeal and should read their full FEMA determination letter carefully. People with insurance should contact their insurance company and report damage; filing an insurance claim will not affect FEMA benefits, according to the agency.

Applicants should answer calls from FEMA, including calls from unfamiliar area codes, because representatives may need additional information. The agency also advised applicants to gather important documents to help with the application process.

The agency emphasized that reporting damage through Crisis Track is not the same as applying for FEMA assistance. Applicants must still complete a FEMA application.
