Williams earns SSAC Defender of the Week

Montgomery, Ala. — Blue Mountain Christian junior libero Abbi Williams has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Defender of the Week following an impressive opening weekend at the Carolina Classic, the conference announced Monday.

Williams, a native of Wetumpka, Alabama, anchored the Volley Toppers’ defense throughout the three-match tournament hosted by Carolina University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She totaled 67 digs across 11 sets, averaging 6.09 digs per set during the opening weekend.

The defensive effort helped Blue Mountain Christian finish the Carolina Classic with a 2-1 record, with both victories coming in straight-set sweeps. The performance provided stability for the Volley Toppers’ defense and created opportunities for the offense, the school said.

“Abbi was a huge part of our success this weekend,” BMCU head coach Sara Eason said. “She was consistent, aggressive and gave us a steady presence defensively in every match. Her ability to read the game and keep plays alive gave our offense opportunities to stay in rhythm. I’m proud to see her hard work recognized with this honor.”

The weekly honor is the first of the season for Williams and for the Volley Toppers. The Southern States Athletic Conference is a collegiate athletic league with member institutions across the southeastern United States. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
