William Carey volleyball rallies past Baptist University of Florida in five sets

William Carey defeated Baptist University of Florida 3-2 in a five-set match Tuesday afternoon in Graceville, Florida, overcoming an early deficit and winning the deciding set 15-9.

Carey fell behind 8-3 in the opening set but rallied to tie the score at 10-10. Baptist University of Florida answered with an 11-4 run and won the set 25-17.

The Crusaders responded in the second set, taking an 11-5 lead. After the Eagles pulled within three points at 16-13, Carey used a 5-0 run to secure a 25-19 victory and even the match at one set apiece.

Carey carried that momentum into the third set, racing to an 11-1 lead and winning 25-7 to move ahead 2-1.

Baptist University of Florida forced a fifth set by winning the fourth 25-23. Three consecutive kills by Hadley Soutiere and Rachell Stegall helped Carey tie the set at 16-16, but the teams later reached a 23-23 deadlock before the Eagles scored the final two points.

Carey opened the deciding set with a 7-2 advantage and controlled the remainder of the set to finish the road victory.

William Carey will host Life University in SSAC play Friday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Ben Waddle Complex.
