Southern Miss soccer heads to Arkansas State for first Sun Belt road match
Southern Miss soccer will play its first Sun Belt Conference match away from Hattiesburg on Thursday, visiting Arkansas State at A-State Soccer Complex in Jonesboro, Arkansas. First kick is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. Both teams enter the match 0-1 in conference play, with Southern Miss at 3-3-2 overall and Arkansas State at 2-3-2.
The match will be Southern Miss' second conference contest after the Golden Eagles opened Sun Belt play against James Madison last Friday. Before that match, Southern Miss had a four-match unbeaten streak that included victories over Southern and Nicholls.
Southern Miss has outshot its opponents 109-99 through eight matches and has scored 17 goals. Ava Bynes leads the Golden Eagles with four goals and nine points, while Ryan Smith has two goals and two assists.
The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series 5-1-3 and have not lost in four visits to Arkansas State, going 1-0-3 in Jonesboro. The last two meetings there ended in 2-2 draws. Arkansas State earned its first series victory last season, winning 5-1 in Hattiesburg.
Arkansas State is coming off a 3-0 loss at Georgia Southern in its Sun Belt opener on Sept. 13. Elleigh Newcomb leads the Red Wolves with three goals, while Kennedy Horn has two goals and an assist and Lucia Flores has scored twice.
Southern Miss will return home Sunday to host Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m. CT at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex.
