Southern Miss hosts UConn in first meeting between football teams
Southern Miss will host UConn in a 6 p.m. football game Saturday at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, marking the first meeting between the programs. The game will be available on ESPN+ and can be heard on a Southern Miss Sports Network affiliate or through SouthernMiss.com.
The Golden Eagles enter at 1-1 after a 43-8 loss at Auburn last weekend. Southern Miss is averaging 28.5 points and 382 yards of total offense per game through two contests. Steven Robinson leads the team with 174 rushing yards, while quarterback Ethan Hampton has completed 31 of 50 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Mario Sanders has nine catches for 152 yards and one touchdown.
Laquan Robinson leads Southern Miss with 17 tackles, followed by Mathis Haygood with 15. Haygood has a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss. The Golden Eagles have recorded six takeaways, including four by Kobi Albert, who has three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
UConn also is 1-1. The Huskies opened with a 56-7 home victory over Lafayette before losing 38-14 at home to Maryland. Kalieb Osborne leads UConn with 421 passing yards, 120 rushing yards and four touchdown passes, completing 29 of 47 attempts with one interception. Javon Brown has six receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown.
UConn is led by first-year coach Jason Candle, who recorded 81 victories in 10 seasons at Toledo before taking over the Huskies. Zion Paret leads UConn with 15 tackles, while K'Von Sherman has 14.
The game begins the first contest of a home-and-home series. Southern Miss is scheduled to travel to Storrs on Nov. 3, 2029. Tickets remain available through SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
