Quick’s two goals lift Southern Miss soccer past Louisiana Tech 2-1

Shaelynn Quick scored in each half, and Southern Miss defeated Louisiana Tech 2-1 at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex. The victory was Southern Miss’ second straight Sun Belt Conference win and fourth in its last five matches.

Quick opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Argentina Estrada advanced the ball from the back line and supplied the assist. Quick struck again in the 54th minute, creating the chance herself to put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-0.

Louisiana Tech’s Caroline Martin scored in the 86th minute, but Southern Miss held on. Logan McGruder made five saves for the Golden Eagles, while Estrada, Georgia Gray and Ella Jefcoat played all 90 minutes.

Southern Miss finished with 20 shots, including 10 on goal, its highest shot total in a Sun Belt match since joining the conference. Quick had five shots and four on goal, while teammate Lorilee Taylor recorded a match-high seven attempts and two shots on goal.

The two-goal performance moved Quick to four goals this season, tying Ava Bynes for the team lead. It was the second brace of Quick’s career and her first since she scored twice against Louisiana on Oct. 24, 2024.

The result gave Southern Miss consecutive Sun Belt victories for the first time since wins over Troy and Louisiana four days apart in October 2024. It also marked the Golden Eagles’ first consecutive wins over Louisiana Tech in the series since 2006 and 2007.

Southern Miss will remain at home to host Louisiana at noon Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex.
