Mississippi State’s Yago Horno Mateo earns SEC Freshman of the Week honors

Mississippi State golfer Yago Horno Mateo has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after placing fourth at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate in his Bulldogs debut, the conference office announced Wednesday.

The freshman from Sotogrande, Spain, opened the tournament with a 3-under 67 and followed with consecutive rounds of 2-under 68 for a 7-under 203 total. He recorded nine birdies and an eagle over 54 holes.

Horno Mateo’s performance was the best debut by a State golfer since Drew Wilson tied for third at the 2024 Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate.

Horno Mateo is the fifth freshman in program history to receive the SEC honor. Current Bulldogs Bryson Hughes and Drew Wilson, along with former State golfers Garrett Endicott and Ford Clegg, have also earned Freshman of the Week honors.
