Jackson State women’s soccer blanks Southern 3-0 in SWAC opener

Jackson State women’s soccer defeated Southern University 3-0 Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field in the teams’ Southwestern Athletic Conference opener. The Tigers improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Kianah Farmer put Jackson State ahead in the 39th minute, sending the Tigers into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper doubled the advantage in the 50th minute on an assist from India Wilson.

Akeelah Mirza completed the scoring in the 62nd minute, with Hawthorn-Harper providing the assist. Farmer led the Tigers with four shots, while Hawthorn-Harper had three shots and two on target.

Goalkeeper Taylor Osborn made six saves to preserve the shutout through all 90 minutes, turning aside three Southern shots in each half. Jackson State held a 20-15 edge in shots and put seven attempts on target, compared with six for Southern.

Jackson State will travel to Grambling State on Thursday, October 8, for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
