Delta State rallies past West Alabama 2-1 in women’s soccer

Delta State University rallied from an early deficit to defeat West Alabama 2-1 on the road Wednesday evening at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex in Livingston, Alabama. The victory moved the Lady Statesmen to 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play, while West Alabama dropped to 1-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league action.

West Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when Bailee Fairley converted a pass from Tianna Klysh. Delta State responded less than eight minutes later, with Emma Earwood scoring in the 12th minute to tie the match.

The score remained 1-1 at halftime. Delta State goalkeeper Kim Bircher made four first-half saves, and the Lady Statesmen produced 12 shots and five corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes.

Delta State moved ahead in the 58th minute. After West Alabama goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez saved attempts from Mariela Dolan and Ava Morin, Millie Webb scored to put the Lady Statesmen in front 2-1. Delta State held the lead over the final 32 minutes, limiting West Alabama to three second-half shots.

Delta State finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, and led 8-6 in corner kicks. Earwood and Webb each scored, while Bircher earned the victory and improved to 3-2-1 on the season.

The Lady Statesmen return to Delta Field on Saturday afternoon for a conference matchup with the Falcons from the University of Montevallo.
