Report finds state wastes up to $600,000 annually on golf course leases
A report called Project Momentum says the state loses as much as $600,000 each year through bad leases and land used for the wrong purposes, and that addressing such waste could unlock larger savings across government.
The analysis, posted on the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor website, highlights state-owned golf courses as an example of property that, officials say, is not being managed to maximize public benefit or reduce costs.
Project Momentum outlines a broader strategy it says could save more than $330 million per year by identifying and correcting similar inefficiencies across state operations. The report argues that some potential savings are blocked by existing laws, while other opportunities are lost when agencies do not pursue straightforward changes.
The report is available on the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor site (osa.ms.gov) under the Reports tab by searching “momentum.” We will provide more information as it becomes available.
