Auditor finds $10.5M in Medicaid spending for unauthorized immigrants
State Auditor Shad White commissioned an analysis earlier this year that found the Mississippi Division of Medicaid identified approximately $10.5 million spent on Medicaid for unauthorized immigrants from federal fiscal year 2023 through 2025, White said in a Facebook post.
Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health coverage to low-income children, adults, seniors and people with disabilities. Federal rules require states to report spending on health care for unauthorized immigrants, and state auditors often review such reporting to ensure transparency and compliance.
White said taxpayers deserve to know how public money is being spent. His office posted that anyone interested in the full report can find it on the auditor’s website under the “Reports” tab by searching “Medicaid.”
The auditor’s findings could prompt further review of reporting practices and program controls at the Mississippi Division of Medicaid. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
