Severe weather threatens Mississippi

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has issued an Enhanced Risk, level three of five, for severe storms across Mississippi from Wednesday afternoon (May 6) into early Thursday morning (May 7).

The outlook warns of damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail as large as a golf ball and the potential for tornadoes, including strong tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center issues convective outlooks to identify areas at elevated risk for organized severe weather.

An Enhanced Risk indicates a greater probability of numerous severe storms capable of producing significant impacts to life and property, travel disruptions and power outages. Forecasters say residents in the risk area should pay close attention to forecast updates and warnings through the period.

Authorities and the Storm Prediction Center advise people to stay weather-aware throughout the day, have multiple ways to receive warnings and know their safe place in case watches or warnings are issued. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
