Mississippi identifies cause of driver’s license scanning problem

State officials said in a Facebook post they have identified the issue causing some Mississippi driver’s licenses not to scan properly at TSA checkpoints and other locations.

The post said affected license holders may schedule an appointment online for June 23 or later at the Driver Service Bureau nearest them to receive a replacement license free of charge. Officials apologized for the inconvenience and asked for patience as they work to resolve the matter.

Scannability of licenses matters for air travel, identity verification and other routine transactions where barcodes or magnetic strips are read electronically. Problems with those features can cause delays at airports and other service points that rely on automated checks.

The Driver Service Bureau handles issuance and replacement of driver’s licenses in the state, and officials encouraged anyone experiencing scanning issues to make an appointment online. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
