Mississippi requires driver’s education for new drivers July 1, 2027

Mississippi will require driver’s education for all new drivers beginning July 1, 2027, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a Facebook post.

The department said a list of approved instructors is available on its website, dps.ms.gov, to help prospective drivers find a program. The post urged people to plan ahead to meet the new requirement.

Driver’s education programs typically teach traffic laws, safe driving techniques and behind-the-wheel experience, and states often adopt such requirements to improve road safety and prepare first-time drivers for licensing. The new requirement is expected to affect teenagers and other first-time applicants who must complete an approved course before receiving a license.

The department did not provide additional details in the post about course length, costs or enforcement. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
