Mississippi requires driver’s education for new drivers starting July 1, 2027

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a Facebook post that starting July 1, 2027, driver’s education will be required for all new drivers in the state.

The agency said a list of approved instructors is available on its website, dps.ms.gov, to help prospective drivers and families find programs. The announcement urged residents to plan ahead to meet the new requirement.

Driver’s education programs generally include classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training designed to teach traffic laws, safe driving practices and hazard recognition. States and safety experts commonly promote such programs as a way to reduce crashes among novice drivers.

The new requirement will affect anyone seeking an initial driver’s license in Mississippi and will likely require coordination between prospective drivers, parents and approved providers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
