Strong winds, heavy rain possible in parts of Mississippi
The National Weather Service in Jackson said gusts over 50 mph could affect much of East and Northeast Mississippi from the overnight hours into early Saturday. Gusts of 40-50 mph are possible elsewhere, with scattered downed trees, power lines and some outages likely.
Locally heavy rain and flooding are possible in parts of East and Northeast Mississippi. Rain is expected to move out and winds decrease by Saturday evening; the weather service urged people to prepare for strong gusts overnight into Saturday.

Yo Bro Coffee Co. plans Witches Ride activities and trivia
Yo Bro Coffee Co. in Hernando will sponsor the community Witches Ride on Saturday, October 10, and host activities throughout the day. The shop says it will be open all day with coffee, treats and a special Witches Brew for registered riders.
Children can take part in Halloween coloring, a scavenger hunt and a kids-only Boo Brew. That evening, the shop will hold its first nighttime Halloween trivia event, with breakfast-for-dinner offerings and cupcake flights.

Land Bank to cover fees for 25 new Genuine MS members
Genuine MS and Mississippi Land Bank announced a membership campaign for agritourism businesses during Agritourism Month. Mississippi Land Bank will cover membership fees for the first 25 new agritourism operations that join Genuine MS between October 1–31, 2026.
Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson and Hunter Taylor, vice president and branch manager of Mississippi Land Bank’s Cleveland office, announced the campaign. Businesses can learn more and apply at GenuineMS.com.

MDWFP explains the Eastern Screech Owl’s nighttime calls
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks highlighted the Eastern Screech Owl as a source of unusual nighttime sounds in Mississippi woods. The owl’s calls can include soft trills and descending whinnies rather than a conventional screech.
The department encouraged people who hear mysterious sounds from trees after dark to listen more closely, noting that the call may come from an Eastern Screech Owl.

Union County museum schedules free Lego storytelling program
The Union County Heritage Museum will host a free program for students in grades 2 through 8 on October 15 from 3:30-4:30. Participants will explore famous Mississippi authors and create their own stories with Legos at the museum.
