Walnut Grove inmates take part in mock job interviews ahead of release
WALNUT GROVE, Miss. — Inmates nearing release at Walnut Grove Correctional Facility took part in mock job interviews this week aimed at preparing them to reenter the workforce, the Mississippi Department of Corrections said.
Thirteen participants were interviewed by staff members, including case managers, alcohol and drug counselors and administrative personnel, MDOC said. During the sessions, participants discussed employment gaps, personal strengths and common workplace challenges, and they were asked about their skills, interests and how they would respond in job-related situations.
“This is an opportunity for them to prepare for the real thing,” Case Manager Devon Moore said in a statement. “Sitting down and answering questions similar to what an employer would ask helps them build confidence and prepare for employment opportunities.”
MDOC said many participants earned educational and vocational certifications while incarcerated. Facilitator Vickie Barton said the program is meant to help them translate those accomplishments into workforce readiness. “This type of preparation reinforces that the work they have done through programs, certifications and classes can be carried forward as they reenter the workforce,” Barton said.
Participants were encouraged to be honest with potential employers about their incarceration and to explain how they used their time productively through programs such as anger management, life skills and vocational training. “Just because someone has a felony conviction does not mean they do not meet the qualifications for employment,” one participant said.
Officials said the mock interviews are intended to boost confidence and improve employment prospects after release. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
