Vicksburg police clarify timeline after Tommy’s BBQ robbery

VICKSBURG, Mississippi — The Vicksburg Police Department on Thursday clarified details of a medical call involving the person accused in a robbery at Tommy’s BBQ after receiving multiple public inquiries, the department said.

Vicksburg police said 911 dispatch received a call about 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, requesting a mental or medical evaluation for an individual reportedly talking to stop signs and sweating heavily. Fire Medic 30, Engine 6 and a Vicksburg police officer were dispatched, and the officer provided routine scene security and standby support because of the nature of the call, the department said.

A review of 911 calls, radio traffic and related records found the individual was not reported to be a threat to himself or others and was not reported to have any weapons, VPD said. Officers made routine contact, asked standard medical questions and reported the person remained calm once inside the ambulance, and the responding officer cleared the scene without incident.

VPD said Fire Medic 30 transported the individual to Merit Health River Region without incident and that the person became disruptive after arriving at the hospital, at which time EMS requested assistance from sheriff’s deputies. The department said the individual was not in Vicksburg police custody before the robbery and did not exhibit behavior during the initial call that would have warranted detention. The clarification was released to provide transparency and address community concerns about the timeline of events. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
