Vicksburg honors fallen with parade, wreath-laying ceremonies
Vicksburg residents and leaders honored U.S. service members who died in wars with a Memorial Day parade and ceremonies, the Vicksburg Police Department said in a Facebook post.
The department said events included the annual Memorial Day Parade through Downtown Vicksburg, a program at the Vicksburg City Auditorium and a wreath-laying ceremony at Vicksburg National Military Park. The post said the community gathered in remembrance, gratitude and patriotism.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to honor men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the site of the Civil War siege of Vicksburg and commemorates those who fought there, and it is managed by the National Park Service.
The Vicksburg Police Department said it was honored to stand alongside citizens, veterans, service members and community leaders as the city reflected on the meaning of the holiday. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
