Tornado watch issued for Lafayette County

A tornado watch was issued for Lafayette County at 8 p.m. on April 28 and is set to expire at 10 p.m., a Facebook post said.

A tornado watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area. Under a watch, severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail and tornadoes are possible, and residents should stay alert to changing weather conditions.

Officials and emergency management agencies typically urge people in affected areas to monitor local forecasts, move vehicles into a garage or away from large trees if possible, and identify a safe shelter such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor. Tuning to local news, radio or a NOAA Weather Radio can provide updates and warning information.

The Facebook post did not provide additional details about the expected storm track or potential impacts. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
