Tornado watch prompts opening of community safe room
A Facebook post says a tornado watch was issued Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and is in effect until 10 p.m. CDT. The post, issued at 8 p.m., said the Community Safe Room at 7312 Highway 51 has been opened to all citizens and will remain open for the duration of the watch.
The post urged residents to monitor the weather closely and be prepared to take immediate shelter if an actual tornado occurs. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop; it is not the same as a tornado warning, which indicates a tornado has been sighted or is indicated by radar.
Community safe rooms provide reinforced shelter during severe weather and are often opened by local authorities when watches or warnings are issued. The National Weather Service typically issues watches and warnings and advises residents to have a plan for where to shelter and how to receive timely weather updates.
This notice provides immediate safety information for residents in the affected area. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
