Facebook post says watch canceled for Lafayette County; notes tornado watch until 10 p.m.

A Facebook post on a Lafayette County community page said a watch has been canceled for Lafayette County and also indicated a tornado watch that expires at 10 p.m.

The social media message did not specify which agency issued or canceled the watch. Tornado watches are generally issued when conditions are favorable for tornado development; they differ from tornado warnings, which indicate a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar.

The post’s mixed wording may cause confusion for residents trying to determine whether to seek shelter. When a watch is in effect, people should stay alert to changing weather, review safety plans and be prepared to move to a safe location if a warning is issued.

Local emergency management offices and the National Weather Service typically provide authoritative information on watches and warnings. Residents are encouraged to monitor official channels, local media and weather alerts for updates. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
