Rankin County warns of scam claiming fraudulent Walmart purchases

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department said scammers are contacting residents with a scheme that alleges victims have had fraudulent Walmart purchases made on their accounts.

In a Facebook post, the department said victims who call the number provided by the scammers are then asked to give information about the bank or financial institution linked to their Walmart account. Once scammers obtain that information, the department said, fraudulent transactions and transfers begin.

The post included a voicemail message a victim received; the department said the recording indicates an artificial intelligence platform was used to convert written text into speech. The department urged residents not to provide bank account information or personal identity details to anyone over the phone.

People with questions about suspicious calls or messages should contact the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department at 601-825-1480. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
