Rankin County charges 14-year-old as adult

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that a 14-year-old suspect is being charged as an adult. The post provided no additional details about the alleged offense, location or timing of the arrest, the agency said.

Rankin County, located east of Jackson in central Mississippi, is served by the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, which is responsible for criminal investigations, patrol and jail operations. The office frequently communicates with residents through social media and public statements.

Charging a juvenile as an adult can move a case from juvenile court to adult criminal court, a step that may carry more severe penalties and different detention arrangements than juvenile proceedings. Laws and procedures for transferring juveniles vary by state and case circumstances, and legal experts say such cases raise questions about sentencing, rehabilitation and public safety.

The sheriff’s office did not release further information in its post. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
