Mississippi moves some juvenile firearm cases to adult court
Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi Senate Bill 2710 will shift how certain offenses by juveniles are handled, potentially sending some cases directly to circuit court instead of youth court, the Picayune Police Department said in a Facebook post.
The department said the law covers juveniles who attempt to commit or commit crimes of violence as defined by Mississippi Code 97-3-2 while in possession of a firearm. Examples cited include murder, aggravated assault, manslaughter, kidnapping, robbery, drive-by shooting and shooting into a dwelling.
The police department warned those cases could result in adult felony charges, lengthy prison sentences, permanent criminal records and long-term effects on employment, education and future opportunities.
Picayune police urged parents and guardians to speak with young people about peer influence, social media conflicts and gang involvement and said the department remains committed to education, prevention and enforcement. The department noted the law takes effect July 1, 2026. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
