Oxford police attend Juneteenth celebration despite rain

Oxford Police Department said on Facebook that officers and staff are attending the Juneteenth Celebration in the Central Elementary parking lot despite wet weather and invite residents to stop by the department tent. The post said visitors can pick up giveaways, learn about services and speak with members of the department.

Juneteenth, observed June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has become a widely recognized celebration of African American history and culture. Local events often include music, food, education and opportunities for community organizations to engage with residents.

The Oxford Police Department is the municipal law enforcement agency for Oxford and routinely participates in community events to build relationships and provide information about public safety services. Such outreach is a common part of community policing strategies aimed at increasing transparency and trust between residents and police.

The department encouraged attendees to stop by its tent and said it looks forward to meeting members of the public. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
