Ocean Springs police warn motorists during heavy rain

The Ocean Springs Police Department is urging motorists to use extreme caution as heavy rainfall impacts the area, the department said in a Facebook post. Low-lying roads and flood-prone locations can become impassable with little warning, officials said.

The department warned drivers never to attempt to drive through flooded roadways, citing the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” safety message that a small amount of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Motorists should slow down and allow extra travel time during periods of heavy rain, the post said.

Authorities also asked residents to report hazardous road conditions to local officials if it is safe to do so and to avoid unnecessary travel while storms continue. “Your safety is our top priority,” the department said in the post.

Ocean Springs is a coastal city in Mississippi with low-lying areas that are vulnerable to flash flooding during heavy rainfall. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
