Mississippi identifies $10.5M in Medicaid spending for undocumented immigrants
Mississippi State Auditor Shad White said the state had not reported Medicaid payments for undocumented immigrants before 2025 and has uncovered about $10.5 million in such spending from 2023 through 2025.
White said in a Facebook post that he commissioned a report after identifying the anomaly to determine why the state’s Medicaid program had not been reporting the expenditures. During that review, the Mississippi Division of Medicaid identified the roughly $10.5 million in payments.
White said federal law requires states to report Medicaid payments for certain noncitizen populations. Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health coverage for low-income Americans and accounts for a significant share of many state budgets, and reporting helps track how public funds are used.
White wrote that Mississippi taxpayers should know the cost of unauthorized immigration and what tax dollars fund, and that his office will continue to report on state spending. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
