The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said on its official Facebook page that “Yesterday was a great day in Oxford for the ribbon cutting of the new Medical Examiner’s Office!”
The department said the new facility follows the elimination of the autopsy backlog and “represents another important step in strengthening the state’s Medical Examiner system and expanding services for communities across North Mississippi.”
Medical examiners conduct death investigations and perform autopsies to determine causes of death, roles that are important for public health, family closure and criminal investigations. State-run medical examiner systems have faced capacity and staffing challenges in recent years in many states, contributing to delays in autopsy and reporting in some jurisdictions.
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety oversees several public safety functions at the state level, including coordination with forensic and investigative services. Officials did not provide additional details about the Oxford facility in the post.
