Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced Monday that James Herzog will serve as a deputy commissioner and director of the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation, Joshua Bromen will serve as a deputy commissioner and director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Division, and Jim Brinson will serve as director of the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security.
Herzog has served as lieutenant colonel of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation since 2024 and brings more than 30 years of experience with the Department of Public Safety and the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Following passage of House Bill 1612, Deputy Commissioner Herzog will oversee the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security and the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory. Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Colonel Phillip Pope will serve as deputy director.
Bromen was named director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Division. He previously served as director of the Office of Public Safety and Planning and has worked on training, professional standards and other public safety initiatives. Under the restructuring created by House Bill 1612, MLED will oversee the Office of Public Safety and Planning, the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers’ Training Academy, the Driver Service Bureau and the Office of Standards and Training.
Brinson, a U.S. Air Force veteran, has served as interim director and previously as deputy director of the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security. He has focused on homeland security, emergency preparedness, active shooter response, terrorism prevention and public safety training aimed at strengthening partnerships and preparedness across the state.
