MEMA urges Mississippians to pick up litter to prevent bigger problems
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is urging residents to take small, proactive steps to prevent larger community problems by picking up litter, the agency said in a Facebook post.
MEMA said the best way to handle a problem is often before it becomes one, noting that preparedness can reduce the impact of disasters and that simple actions such as removing litter help protect communities, waterways and public spaces.
The agency said it supports the work of First Lady Elee Reeves and the Mississippi Litter Prevention Task Force in encouraging residents to take part in keeping the state clean. MEMA included the campaign hashtags #PickItUpMississippi, #OnePieceAtATime and #PreparedMississippi in its post.
State emergency management agencies like MEMA coordinate preparedness, response and recovery efforts for disasters and often promote public resilience measures. Small community actions to reduce litter can complement broader environmental and emergency-preparedness goals. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
