Lowndes County sheriff’s office investigates fatal shooting on Steens Vernon Road

Deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunshots at approximately 2:21 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, on Steens Vernon Road and found an unresponsive person suffering an apparent gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. The person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Several individuals who were present were transported to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and are being interviewed by investigators, the post said. Investigators said they believe the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

No charges have been filed as investigators continue to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the sheriff’s office said. Anyone with information related to the incident was asked to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office at 662-328-6788 or submit an anonymous tip through Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers.
